What peace means to me
I grew up at a time when the term “peace” was the mantra and an ideal for a better world. It was stamped on t-shirts. It often was the driving force behind television commercials and songs. It was braided into many other aspects of popular culture. I always saw the graphic symbol of peace as a sacred confluence of understanding, surrender, and compassion, all of which are necessary elements, working in unison, to promote this ideal. As people and communities across the world continue to grow and evolve—so often, through suffering and conflict—the idea of peace may, at times, seem illusive or unattainable. But I remain hopeful, and I believe that peace is possible, starting first with a desire to achieve it from within our own hearts and extending outward from there.
Why I joined the Board of Directors of the PCoC
Early in my career, I had the great fortune to work with a remarkable team of social workers and administrators dedicated to resolving conflict in schools through peer mediation. The process taught me that we truly can create a better world by better understanding the people, circumstances, and barriers within it.
I am heartened and inspired by the work of the Peace Center and its commitment to creating safer, more peaceful communities by building the capacity of individuals, families, and systems within those communities. I always knew that I wanted to be a part of this powerful movement, and I am truly honored be part of this team.
